Green Cards issued to most permanent residents are valid for 10 years. You should file Form I-90 to renew your card during the 6-month window before it expires. USCIS recommends not waiting until the last few months, as processing times can extend beyond the expiration date. Conditional Green Cards (valid 2 years) are renewed through Form I-751, not I-90.
Other Reasons to File I-90
Beyond renewal, Form I-90 is used to: replace a lost, stolen, or damaged card; correct errors on your card (such as misspelled name or wrong birthdate); update your card after a legal name change; obtain a new card if your previous one was issued more than 10 years ago; or replace a card never received in the mail.
Filing Options: Online vs. Mail
USCIS strongly recommends filing Form I-90 online through the myUSCIS account portal. Online filing is faster, allows you to track your case, and reduces the chance of errors. You can also file by mail, but processing is generally slower. The filing fee is $455 plus an $85 biometrics fee (total $540 as of 2025, verify at uscis.gov).
After You File
After filing, you will receive a receipt notice (I-797) that temporarily extends your Green Card's validity for 18 to 24 months. This extension notice, combined with your expired card, can be used as evidence of lawful status for employment (I-9 compliance), travel, and other purposes. You will then receive a biometrics appointment notice, followed eventually by your new card in the mail.

Form I-90 processing times ranged from 12 to 24 months as of 2025, depending on the service center handling your case. Check the USCIS website for current estimates. For urgent situations (employment, travel), consult a professional about expedite options.

Is there a penalty for having an expired Green Card?
Your permanent resident status does not expire, only the card itself does. However, an expired card can cause problems with employment authorization verification (I-9), travel, and accessing certain benefits. Keep it current.
Can I travel with an expired Green Card?
Generally no, airlines and border officers expect a valid card or receipt notice extending validity. If you have the I-90 receipt notice and your expired card, you should be able to re-enter the U.S. after international travel, but check with your airline before departing.
What if my Green Card was never delivered?
File Form I-90 with a basis of 'not received' if your card was mailed but never arrived. Contact the USPS and USCIS first to verify whether it was returned. Also consider changing your address if it may have been delivered to a prior address.
Do I need to renew if I'm applying for citizenship?
You do not need to renew before applying for naturalization, but you do need a valid Green Card for the N-400 biometrics appointment and interview. If your card will expire before those steps, consider renewing it while your N-400 is pending.
