The F-1 nonimmigrant visa allows foreign nationals to study at accredited U.S. colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, academic high schools, elementary schools, and language training programs. The F-1 status is tied to your enrollment in a SEVP-certified institution and is maintained as long as you comply with specific rules.
How to Obtain an F-1 Visa
To obtain an F-1 visa, you must: (1) be accepted to a SEVP-certified school, (2) receive a Form I-20 from your school's Designated School Official (DSO), (3) pay the SEVIS fee (currently $350), (4) apply at a U.S. consulate or embassy in your home country with your I-20, valid passport, proof of financial support, and DS-160 visa application, and (5) attend a visa interview. If you are already in the U.S. on another status, you may be able to change status without leaving.
Maintaining F-1 Status
To maintain valid F-1 status you must: enroll full-time every semester (exceptions require DSO authorization), make normal academic progress toward your degree, report changes of address to your DSO within 10 days, not work without authorization, keep your passport valid, and maintain a valid I-20. Violations can jeopardize your status and lead to removal.
On-Campus vs. Off-Campus Work
F-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week during school and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work requires specific authorization: Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for jobs related to your major, or Optional Practical Training (OPT) after completing your degree. Unauthorized employment is a serious status violation.
The Duration of Status (D/S) Concept
Your F-1 visa stamp has an expiration date, but your status is authorized 'Duration of Status' (D/S), meaning you are authorized to stay as long as you maintain valid enrollment and comply with F-1 rules. The visa stamp expiration and your status authorization are separate concepts that confuse many students.

Can I travel outside the U.S. with an F-1 visa?
Yes, if your visa stamp is still valid. If your visa has expired, you must obtain a new F-1 visa stamp at a U.S. consulate abroad before re-entering the U.S. Your DSO must sign your I-20 for travel.
Can my family accompany me on an F-2 visa?
Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can apply for F-2 dependent visas. F-2 holders cannot work in the U.S.
What is a SEVIS record?
SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is the database that tracks F-1 students. Your school maintains your SEVIS record and notifies the government if you fall out of status.
What happens if I fail or withdraw from classes?
Dropping below full-time status or withdrawing without DSO authorization violates your F-1 status. Contact your DSO immediately if you are considering any course load change.
